Week 5 ~ Oct 21-25 ~ Algebra

Monday:  We were able to take our quiz today.  Most students finished it.  Homework was make up work.  I also sent home progress reports today.  These need to be signed by parents & returned by Wednesday.  Extra Credit for turning them in by Tuesday.

Tuesday:  Today we worked independently on Task 2.  Students are to come tomorrow with questions, however, they need to have some of it done in order for their questions to be answered.  This can be done in their notebooks or on a separate piece of paper.  Task 2 document

Wednesday:  Today we did Task 2 together in class.  We answered questions the students had regarding what was required on the task.  Calculator are allowed as long as students are showing their work as well.  Homework tonight is a make up time - any tests/quizzes/missing work.

Thursday:  Today's lesson was about sequences.  The homework was given in class to 3rd period.  5th period did not get the homework due to me being called out for a meeting at the last minute.  They will do it in class Friday.  Come see me for the work.

Friday: Today we covered sequences a little more in depth.  Homework is this Worksheet

Week 5 ~ Oct 21-25 ~ Math 8

Monday:  Today we finished discussing scientific notation & how to compare them.  Remember to make the numbers either all in scientific or all in Standard notation before comparing!  HW  Pg 207 # 37, 40-49.

Tuesday: Today we completed Task 4 in class.  Most students were able to completely finish & turn it in, but a few needed to take it home.  The task instructions are below & you need to complete them in your Interactive Notebook.  Today's homework is to work on any make up work you may need to finish.

TASK 4: Since you did such a great job with the monster trucks, NASA hired you to use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the distance from earth of a newly discovered planet that they have named Daffy. Satellites show that Daffy is 9 billion miles east of earth and 12 billion miles north of earth. However, to be consistent with how NASA’s technology was designed, your answer must be scientific notation.
• Working independently, apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine how far away Daffy is from earth in billions of miles.
• Verify the accuracy of your calculations by comparing with your teammates.
• Convert your answer to scientific notation.
• In scientific notation, how much farther is Daffy north of Earth than east of Earth.
• While making your calculations, you decide to take out a telescope to see if you can locate Daffy. You are unable to, however which searching for Daffy you discover a brand new planet that is four times as far away as Daffy. Your task is to calculate the distance of the new planet so you can name it after yourself.

Wednesday:  Today students looked at their current progress reports and decided what 3 things they wanted to do to raise their grade.  This was also their homework!

Thursday:  We made it to the end of Unit 2.  In class we worked on a UPS-Check model of solving word problems.  We did 2 examples in class.  Friday, we'll take a quiz over the same material.  To get full points, students must be able to fill out each section of the UPS check form (Understand, Plan, Solve, Check)

Friday: Quiz Today!  Almost everyone finished it in class. Homework is a blue worksheet which reviews evaluating expressions.  If you need a copy of it please come see me!

Week 4 ~ Oct 14 - 18 Algebra 1

Monday:  We began our discussion of systems of equations by looking at their graphs.  HW Pg 378 # 2-5, 8-10, 12, 13

Tuesday:  Today we solved systems by adding or subtracting the 2 equations together.  HW Pg 394, # 6-8, 18-20, 25-27

Wednesday:  Continuing with our systems of equations lessons, these required a couple extra steps but are quite simple once you find the pattern.  HW Pg 401 # 8-11, 18-21, 46

Thursday:  Today we learned to graph linear inequalities.  HW is Pg 429 # 6-14, 19-22

Week 4 ~ October 14-18 ~ Math 8

Monday ~ Today we finished up our Task 2 by writing a memo to the company explaining our new ramp lengths.  We started this example in class & students just needed to finish it for homework.

Tuesday ~  We began working on Task 3 which was a final ramp design as well a a proof that the area we found was correct.  This is a mostly in class project that we'll be finishing tomorrow.  The dimensions for the final ramp are 24 feet high and 32 feet long.

Wednesday ~ We finished working on Task 3 today.  Many students were able to finish in class, those who didn't need to finish it at home tonight.  Here is a photo of what the project should look like.

Thursday ~ Today we discussed the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem.  Basically you just need to take the 3 lengths they give you and plug them into the formula.  If it is a true statement, the triangle is a right triangle.  If not, then the triangle is NOT a right triangle.  HW:  Pg 468 # 13-18, 43

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Week 3 ~ Oct 7 - 11 ~ Algebra 1

Welcome to week 3!  Progress reports will be sent out this week!

Monday:  We discussed the rules for products and exponents.  These are in the book, but we also took notes on them and then practiced them.  HW: Pg 463, # 8-14 evens, 20-30 evens, 37, 48

Tuesday:  Today we finished up our exponent rules with the quotient rules.  Again, they are in the book and in our notes.  HW: Pg 470 # 8-18 evens, 22-32 evens, 43, 44

Wednesday: Today we discussed fractional exponents.  Fraction Exponents Video  HW: Pg 501 # 18-21, 25-30

Thursday:  Today we worked on Task 1 in class. What was not finished was to be done for homework.  This should be done in your Interactive Notebook, so it won't be part of the homework packet for tomorrow.  Task 1 Document

Friday:  Today we took Quiz 2C & turned in our HW packet.  I also checked off the Task 1 for completion.  The homework for the weekend is to get caught up on any missing work or test corrections.

Week 3 ~ Oct 7 - 11~ Math 8

Welcome to Week 3!

Monday:  We worked on finding the missing side in a right triangle.  Homework: Pg 467 # 4, 5, 11, 12, & Pg 501, #18-20.    Pythagorean Theorem Video

Tuesday:  Today we worked on word problems and real world examples of the Pythagorean Theorem.  Remember to draw your picture to help you find which side you're looking for!  HW: Pg 467, # 6, 19, 34, 44

Wednesday: We worked on using Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between 1 points on a graph. There is a formula, but it is big and ugly!  Instead, plot the 2 points, connect them and draw a right triangle.  Then count the length of each side and plug it into our formula.  HW: Pg 479 # 11-14

Thursday:  Task 1 was on the agenda for today!  Attached are the necessary papers you need to complete the work.  to get a 3 out of 3, You'll need to draw the 3 triangles, label them correctly and find the the correct answer (in feet).  To get some extra credit, you'll need to explain how you know your ramp length is correct (think of using the longest side & shortcut method).  Task 1 Instructions  Ramp A  Ramp B  Ramp C

Friday:  Today we did Task 2.  The company has come back and said they want to see each of the ramps with the height increased by 5 feet.  Complete these drawings and calculations correctly to earn 3 out of 3.  To get a 4, you'll need to find the ramp length if you increased the height by 10 feet.  We did 1 example in class.

Monday, September 9 ~ Math 8

We are working to finish our Projects for this triad!  For your final task, you'll need to write a 1-2 page essay describing your paper.  Include what sorts of transformations you did (reflection, translation, etc.) and some examples as well.

We started the essay in class. Students need to describe AT LEAST the top row of transformations tonight.  We can discuss the column paragraph in class tomorrow.

Here is a basic intro to help you get started.

I began my art project by drawing a right triangle in quadrant 2 of my graph.  For the first transformation, I reflected the triangle across the x-axis.  This created a mirror image of the original triangle.  I found the new points of the vertices of my triangle by keeping the x-value the same and changing the y-value to the opposite.  For example, the point B(-3, 1) became B'(-3, -1).

We'll continue working on this tomorrow!

All students received their textbooks today.

The books can stay at home!  I have a set of books in my classroom that we can use for classwork as necessary.

Please remember to keep the books in excellent condition.  If you find anything majorly wrong with your book, please bring it to Mrs. Schwab in the Library by Monday, August 19 so she can note the damage and not hold you responsible for it.  Any damage found after Monday will be your responsibility.

Homework tonight was pretty simple
1) Look through your textbook for any issues (torn pages, markings that make it unusable, inappropriate language, etc).

2) On a piece of paper, write 2 statements that are true about you & 1 statement that is false.  Periods 5 & 6 had the reverse (2 lies & 1 truth).  We'll be sharing them in class on Wednesday to get to know each other better.

I hope you all had an excellent summer & are ready to get back to school!

I am excited to get to know each one of you and I look forward to our time together. Let me tell you a bit about myself.

This is my 8th year at DVMS and this year I'm teaching all 8th grade math as well as ASB/Leadership.  I enjoy traveling with my hubby (we celebrated our 6th anniversary on the first day of school!), camping, wakeboarding and being with my family.  I'm originally from Washington state and enjoy going home for visits when I can.

I graduated from Walla Walla University (so nice they named it twice) in 2005 with an education degree and I finished my Masters in Math Education in 2010 at Lesley University.

This is my first year having a classroom blog and I'll do my best to keep up updated and to answer any questions you have for me.

Since I have 2 classes, I'll be putting 2 entries in each day.  Please be aware of which post you are looking at and make sure you get the right one for your class!

Lets have a fantastic year!
