Algebra ~ Week 4 ~ March 24 - 28

Monday:  Today we started discussing exponential growth functions.  Homework is the worksheet given in class, # 1-12.

Tuesday:  Today we started using exponential functions to describe real world situations.  Homework was given in class as a quick worksheet problem.

Math 8 ~ Week 4 ~ March 24 - 28

Monday:  Today we began looking at Solving systems by Elimination.  Homework is the Worksheet given in class, odds only.

Tuesday:  Today, we continued practicing the elimination method.  Homework is yesterday's worksheet, the evens!

Algebra ~ Week 2 ~ March 10-14

Monday:  Today we began looking at piecewise functions.  Remember to draw your boundary line/fence before you start graphing the equations!  Homework is both sides of the worksheet given in class.  Extra copies are available if you need them!Piecewise Functions Video Copy of today's notes/examples

Tuesday:   Today's focus was on Distance-Time Graphs.  We just did a basic introduction to them.  Homework is a worksheet that you can pick up in my class if necessary!  We'll continue with them on Thursday.

Wednesday:  Due to the West Valley Field Trip, tonight there is NO HOMEWORK!

Thursday:  Today we continued to discuss Distance-Time Graphs.  Students are working on a group project in class so there is no extra homework today.  If they want to bring something extra to decorate their poster, they can, but it isn't required :)

Math 8 ~ Week 2 ~ March 10-14

Monday:  Today we looked at using graphs to solve systems of equations.  Video Help  Homework is Pg 433 # 3, 5, 7-9, 13, 14  Today's Notes/Examples

Tuesday:  Today we learned to solve for y before solving the system.  Homework is Pg 434 # 15-18, 40, 41

Wednesday:  Because of the West Valley Field Trip, there is NO HOMEWORK TONIGHT!

Thursday:  Today we worked on Task 1 in class.  Many students may have finished it in class.  Those who didn't need to finish it for homework tonight.

Algebra ~ Week 1 ~ March 3-7

Monday:  Today the students had a chance to continue working on the Basketball Challenge in class.  This was a group working environment and everyone should have been able to finish it today. Homework was the "Did you Hear..." Worksheet.  An extra copy is available in my room!

Tuesday:  Today we worked on application of the quadratic formula in word problems in class.  Students needed to finish their "Did you hear.." worksheet and write their own example of a quadratic word problem for homework.

Wednesday, Thursday & Friday:  For these days we worked in class on a project involving different types of graphing equations.  Since this was an in class project, we had very little homework.  Each day the students needed to complete some basic calculations that we covered the next day in class.

Math 8 ~ Week 1 ~ March 3 - 7

Monday:  We are starting a new unit today!  Because graphing will be so important in this unit, today we reviewed the ways we can graph linear equations.  Homework is Pg 810 # 19-26

Tuesday:  Today we reviewed finding solutions to linear equations.  Homework is Pg 394, # 3-6, 12-15, 35-38.

Wednesday & Thursday:  We spent these days working on our stained glass project.  Students had time in class both days to work on the project and ask questions. See me if you need another copy of the graph or instructions

Friday: Today we took a quiz about graphing & finding solutions.  Students who were absent will be able to make it up next week.  With any extra time, students were allowed to work on their stained glass project or any other missing work.

Week 6 ~ Algebra ~ February 10-14

Monday:  Today we learned to graph quadratic equations using vertex form.  It can be tricky.  Watch the video for a little more help or come and see me.  Homework is a  worksheet that can be found in my class if you need it!

Tuesday:  Due to the AVID field trip and about half of the algebra students being gone today, we had a study hall in class.  Students had the time to work on missing work or test corrections.  There was no new homework tonight.

Wednesday:  Today we looked at intercept form for graphing quadratic equations.  Video.  Homework is Pg 621, # 3-5, 9-12.

Thursday:  Today we learned about how to solve a quadratic inequality.  We'll be revisiting this lesson after break!  Homework is the Inequality worksheet you were given in class!

Friday:  Today we took a group quiz in class.  We also turned in this week's homework and notes.

Week 6 ~ Math 8 ~ February 10-14

Monday:  Today we looked at point slope form for graphing linear equations.  You can watch this VIDEO to get a little bit of extra help.  Homework is the Point-Slope WS.  If you need another copy, you can find it in my room on the Worksheet Wall.

Tuesday:  Today we continued with Point-Slope Form with graphing.  How To Video  Homework is the Point-Slope Graphing WS.  As always, you can find it in my classroom!

Wednesday:  Today we did Task 3 in class together.  All students should have turned this in before they left for the day.  Homework is the attached worksheet.  It is also available in my class. Wednesday Homework

Thursday:  Today we learned about function notation.  Homework was pg 428 # 3-9, 11-16.

Friday:  Today we turned in this week's homework as well as notes.  We also did Task 4 in class.  All students should have finished it.  Those who didn't will need to turn it in the Monday after break!

Algebra ~ Week 5 ~ February 3-7

Monday:  Today we corrected our quiz from Friday in class.  Students will get these back tomorrow.  We also began looking at the quadratic formula.  Your homework is to memorize the formula for tomorrow's lesson.  Here is a quick song to help you out!  Quadratic Formula Song

Tuesday:  Today was focused on how to use the quadratic formula.  Homework is Pg 652 # 9-17

Wednesday:  Today was spent with more practicing of the Quadratic formula.  Remember that it is OK to use a calculator, you just need to be sure you're showing what numbers you plug in!  Homework, Pg 653 # 19-29 odd.

Thursday:  Today we worked on Task 2 in class.  Most students were able to finish in before class was out.  Those who didn't need to finish it for homework. Task 2 Worksheet

Friday:  Today we took a quiz.  Homework is to be sure all your missing work and test corrections are turned in .  All missing work is due by Thursday, February 13 at 3:30.

Math 8 ~ Week 5 ~ February 3 - 7

Monday:  Today we reviewed how to find the slope of a line when we have a graph.  Homework is a slope worksheet that can be found in my class if you've lost it.  The only change is that you need to find each slope 2 times to show that the slope is the same no matter which points you choose.

Tuesday:  Today we reviewed finding slope when you are given 2 points.  Remember there are 2 methods:  Plot the points and count or follow the steps from your notes.  Homework is the worksheet you were given in class.  We spent quite a bit of time working on it in class so finishing it should be no trouble!

Wednesday: Today we looked at ways slope is used in the real world.  Our focus was mostly on rate of change.  Remember that since we are talking about a rate, you need to include measurements for each number.  Homework is the Rate of Change Worksheet.

Thursday:  Today we did task 2 together in class.  All students should have turned it in before they left the class period.  Absent students will have a chance to make it up next week.

Friday:  Today we took a quiz on rate of change.  Period 1 students have homework on pg 810 # 15-20, 23  & 24.  Period 6 has the assignment of getting all missing work caught up.  Remember that all missing work is due by Thursday, February 13!

Algebra ~ Week 4 ~ January 27 - 31

Monday:  Today we did Task 1 in class.  The assignment is below and it is due on Tuesday.

Task 1

A customer would like an open box made from copper that has a volume of 120 cubic inches.  It needs to be three inches tall.  They don't care how wide it is, but it must be 3 inches longer than it is wide.  copper sheets are sold in rectangular pieces.  What re the dimensions of the copper sheet you should buy in order to build this box?  For extra points:  If copper costs$0.30 per square inch, how much will it cost to build this box?

Tuesday: To get us ready for Wednesday's lesson, today we learned how to solve equations using the square root method.  Homework is Pg 636, # 4-28 evens

Wednesday: Today we learned how to complete the square.  Complete the Square Video  Homework is Pg 646, # 3-8, 16-23

Thursday:  Today, students worked in class on Completing the square with more complex problems.  Homework is Pg 646 # 31-39

Friday:  Today we took a quick quiz on completing the square.   This weekend is a catch-up weekend.  Use it to do any missing work or test corrections that you may need to get done!

Math 8 ~ Week 4 ~ January 27 - 31

Monday:  Today we practiced writing an equation from a line or from 2 given points.  Homework is Pg 422 # 8-17

Tuesday:  Today's focus was on drawing a best fit line for a scatter plot.  Check out the video for some pointers. Best Fit Line Video Homework is the Best Fit Worksheet and is available in my room.

Wednesday:  Today we looked at how to use the best fit line to predict a value and how to find the equation of the best fit line.  Homework is Pg 422, # 7, 26, 33, 47

Thursday:  Today we did task 1 in class. If you were absent, you can make up tomorrow!

Friday: Today we finished Task 1.  The forms you need are attached.  I'll be collecting Task 1 on Monday.  To get full credit, you'll need to have the following in your packet:
            ~Data list (measurements of yourself and classmates)
            ~ Scatter Plot
            ~Best Fit Line on Scatter Plot
           ~1 Paragraph explaining how you know your best fit line is accurate and reasonable.

Algebra ~ Week 3 ~ January 21 - 24

Monday: NO SCHOOL!  YAHOO!!!

Tuesday & Wednesday:  We spent these days MAP testing.  You have 1 graphing worksheet to complete for Wednesday.  As always, if you don't have one, you can find an extra copy in my room on the worksheet wall!

Thursday & Friday:  Both days were spent working on factoring special polynomials.  Homework is Pg 576 # 3-14.  Since I was out on Thursday, you have until Monday to turn in your HW packet!

Math 8 ~ Week 3 ~ January 21 - 24

This week we are focusing on factoring some more!  There are several methods to use, we will be using the X and the Box method and seen here X-Box Method for Factoring

Wednesday: Pg 570, # 44, 53-55, 57-59\

Thursday: Pg 595, # 19-24, 34, 35

Friday:  Today we took a quiz.  Homework for the long weekend is to make sure your notes are caught up and ready to go for next week!

Math 8 ~ Week 2 ~ January 13 - 17

Monday:  Today we continued to work on graphing lines using slope intercept form.  HW was Pg 416, # 20, 31a &b, 32 a, 34-37

Tuesday - Friday:  We worked in class on Tasks 1-4.  Students had ample time in class to get these done.  I'll be collecting them next week!

Algebra ~ Week 1 ~ Jan 6-10

Monday :  Time to get back in the swing of things!  We spent today reviewing the concepts of solving and factoring polynomials.  Homework is a Factoring worksheet.  If you need a copy, you can get one the classroom on the worksheet wall.

Tuesday:  Today we began factoring quadratic equations!  Remember that the method in the book is a little different from how I taught you today, so use your notes & check out the video for a reminder!  Factor Quadractics

Wednesday:  We finished up factoring our quadratic equations today with a lesson on solving them.  Remember, finding the roots means the same thing as being equal to zero!

Thursday:  Today we looked at how to use quadratic equations in solving word problems.
Homework, Pg 561, #64-70

Friday:  Quiz Day!  After the quiz students were given a worksheet to work on.  It is available on the worksheet wall in my classroom.

Math 8 ~ Week 1 ~ January 6-10

Monday:  Today we got back in the swing of things with some quick classroom review activities.  Homework was the worksheet which is available in my classroom on the Worksheet wall

Homework is in the textbook, Pg 407, # 8-10, 22-27, 35, 41-44

Wednesday: Slope-Intercept form was our topic today!  Homework is Pg 415, # 10-12, 14-19

Thursday:  We continued practicing graphing lines today.  Homework is Pg 416, # 22-27, however, you need to ignore the directions & graph the equations instead.

Friday: Quiz Day!  After the quiz, you had a worksheet to work on.  Extra copies can be found in my room on the worksheet wall.

New Semester!

Welcome to 2nd Semester!

First off, I'd like to apologize for not updating the blog in a while.  Time got away from me, but with a new year comes resolutions & I'll be doing much better in the coming weeks!

Just a reminder that all your previous grades are gone and no longer effect your overall grade.  This is a chance for you to start fresh and make the most of this 2nd half of the year!

As always, tutoring is on MONDAY & WEDNESDAY from 3:30 - 4:00 in my classroom.  Students are always welcome to come and get caught up on work, ask questions, or just get the day's homework done.
